Histories collided last night (in the bastion of southern style that is Atlanta) as the worlds of Rumraket/Efterklang and Canon Blue were brought together for the very first time. The occasion was Efterklang's stellar show at the Drunken Unicorn just outside of downtown Atlanta. A wonderful evening was spent with truly the nicest people in show business, discussing Danish Music, local cuisine & Politics (why do non-Americans care more about American politics than Americans do?)

Mr. Lonely

I went to the Nashville premiere of native son Harmony Korine's new movie Mr. Lonely. Harmony came out to introduce the film and then answered questions afterword. I wasn't sure what to expect as Gummo and Julian Donkey Boy definitely had a very specific style and feel. But surprisingly Mr. Lonely really felt like an entirely different director almost and was quite a marked change from all of his previous work.

"All he would ever be was an observer. He waited with serenity. Life had never been good enough to him for him to wince at its destruction. He told himself that he was indifferent even to his own dissolution. It seemed to him that this indifference was the most that human dignity could achieve, and for the moment forgetting his lapses, forgetting even his narrow escape of the afternoon, he felt he had achieved it. To feel nothing was peace."

That was the Harmony I was expecting to see come through in the film, but instead it seemed to be colored by something more hopeful and optimistic. A desire for transcendence and a connection with the outside world came through in ways that I hadn't seen before in his other films and it was very moving. Who knows if thats what he was after, but suffice it to say it was definitely one of my favorite films this year.

I went to St. Louis last night to see Liars and Radiohead and packed up the car with a few friends to make the 5 hour trek. I had seen Radiohead play at the same place for the Hail to the Thief Tour in 2003, but had gotten there late and was basically in the weeds. So I was Looking forward to actually having a seat this time (Thanks Patrick)(Sorry Lawn Sitters).

First up was Liars. I got into them with They Were Wrong So We Drowned record & definitely loved Drums Not Dead, but I wasn't sure how they would come across in an ampitheater with the sun still out. They're the kind of band I want to see at 3 am in a dark cave after I haven't slept for 2 days. But they definitely pulled it off. 'Broken Witch' was as menacing and sinister as ever as was most of their set.

Radiohead were fantastic as expected. The light show was really unique, looking like a cage built of steel icicles (which was way cooler than it sounds) and was backed by a really simple video setup that still managed to be cooler than most every other video show i'd seen. They opened with All I need, then made their way through Jigsaw and Airbag before pulling out Kid A, which was definitely my favorite of the evening. The live version is almost somehow creepier and more haunting than the album. It has a quiet rave quality about it, like standing in the middle of a screaming crowd with headphones on.

And then they were done, leaving us all to wonder where would the world be without Radiohead?

probably still here, but definitely less enjoyable.....

Canon Blue To Play Roskilde

The Danes may be known for churning out good childrens stories, philosophers, and beautiful people, but they are also known for putting on amazing music festivals. The Roskilde Festival being no exception:

Late April we will release their debut EP and late summer we will release their debut album. We will only release this album in Denmark - outside it will be released on the british label Bella Union (Midlake, Explosions in the Sky and many others). Our Broken Garden is based around Anna Bronsted who to some is known as the angelic voice and pianoplayer of the Efterklang liveband. Amateur Chemist / West Coast Recap

Back from a fantastic week of west coast shows with our friends We Barbarians & Delta Spirit. Both bands are currently on tour right now, so if they are near to you its definitely worth the trip!

Also, here's a brief review of the Detroit Bar show by Mr. Amateur Chemist himself:

"Their set seemed to be criminally brief and another observation was that I noticed the bar chatter in the club was extremely low as many patrons were taking in their set....I don't know too much about the Nashville scene but I think Canon Blue could easily find a welcome home in California."

so the house and garden tour is complete. many thanks to everyone who helped with putting shows together and who came out for the 'rock'. we played a lot of great cities, but i have to say that montreal is now one of my favorites...even if they did give me a ticket within 10 min. of being there. its like being in france. crazy.

so now, back home working on new material and putting together the next run of dates. a new song to be included on the upcoming arctic circle winter compilation will be out soon.....more news to follow...

just a quick note to announce another canon blue show, this time in the windy city. it will be at the club ronny's with the band berry who are not to be missed....

and not that they need my help, but if you haven't checked out the new dirty projectors album 'rise above' you need to do so immediately. it was produced by resident genius chris taylor, who was also responsible for his band grizzly bear's 'yellow house' (as well as mixing our very own colonies). this is the kind of record that will destroy your head and rebuild it anew before you even know whats happening. this is one of 'those' records. on tour now....

a new show has been added for ann arbor michigan...this will be the latest addition to the 'house and garden' tour and will be with the wonderful people of the band perhapsy .

in keeping with the cold winter theme of michigan in oct., new canon blue music will be featured on the upcoming arctic circle compilation. the album will feature all original music centered around the theme of winter/christmas. there are some great bands involved, including peter broderick soon to be on tour with efterklang.

in other news total:spec will be running feature on colonies and everything that went into to it. should be available in the beginning of oct.

finally, the european release date for colonies is now only 10 days away (sept. 24)....better get there early cause i'm sure the lines will be around the block...like really long lines.....so you might want to get there early.....cause a lot of people are going to........long lines......

the first canon blue shows went off without a hitch....well almost....whenever the power was working it was great. special thanks to everyone who came out and picked up a copy of the record.

been staring at this for the past week:

the studio is in utter chaos as we try to reconstruct the album for the live show...progress is being made though! 'rum diary' is up and running and 'pale horse' is not far behind (that was a horribly unintentional pun)....

and since we're rehearsing we kind of figured maybe we should play a show or two as well....a house show tour is currently in the works to take us in to the fall. so if you have a living room/basement/kitchen/bathroom and would like to have canon blue serenade you personally, please be in contact....

and finally, a collection of canon blue remixes is currently being put together. its too early to say who yet, but i can guarantee you will not be let down! hopefully once all is said and done we will be able to collect them all in one place so that you may enjoy them in one sitting....

Canon Blue Signs With Rumraket

Finally after many long sleepless nights spent wandering aimlessly across the lonely back-country, Canon Blue has found a home in Denmark. Rumraket is a label started and run by the wonderful band Efterklang, home to such amazing artists as Grizzly Bear, Amiina, Slaraffenland, Taxi Taxi! and of course the afor-mentioned Efterklang.

The album has been re-mixed by Chris Taylor (Grizzly Bear, Dirty Projectors) and mastered by Cristian Vogel. If you haven't seen Grizzly Bear live or at least bought their record 'yellow house' you are destined to have a moment of regret. and if you never experienced the magnificent madness of Cristian Vogel, you have yet to live. (remyxomatosis just might change your life).

and if that wasn't enough, new artwork has been crafted by the insanely talented Ben Tousley. please go and witness a master at work...

The album is slated for a European release of Sept. 24th. All Americans will have to wait unfortunately.....probably will do us good though....we've had it easy for way too long.....

control seems to be a recurring theme in 'colonies'. lack of it, being on the recieving end of it, desparately trying to use it...its the unfolding and evolving world that keeps slipping in and out of different perspectives. different motives. everyone trying to grab at it like a slippery snake trying not to be on the recieving end of its bite.....not always succeeding. but the best way to deal with a snake bite is to suck out the poison and thats what 'colonies' is, or at least attempts to do. a mental vacumn over the irritated and bulging skin of a bitten and failing heart........and at the end of a long night after we no longer have the strength to get up, we slip exhausted into the comforting arms of the water now filling up the bathtub world around us........

i've been enjoying really long walks as of late. my sort of personal stand against those greedy bloated opec'ers i suppose. but its nice being able to enjoy personal benefits, such as fitness of health, more income (previously spent on gas), and smaller carbon footprints. too bad nashville is one of the most poorly laid out cities in the country...

what? music? hmmm........oh yes.....music. thats what i do. thats what canon blue is for. not all this psycho babble. where are the new tunes? where is that split 7" with 'wolf wolf' you promised us? does anyone else have difficulty reading music magazines anymore? i used to be devoted to my monthly editions of Q magazine and SPIN and now i can't even be bothered to open the cover. too many bands, canon blue included. its a shame i'm not good at anything else (some would even argue that point)....the musical apocalypse is upon us....

all of the current orders for 'colonies' have been fulfilled and should be arriving at various doorsteps around the world in the coming days. a special heartfelt thanks for the lack of lawsuits and paypal fines as the canon blue factory took an unbearably long time to recover from the christmas holidays.

speaking of, the canon blue house/factory is currently in the middle of being converted into a workable studio/rehearsal space. there's a beautiful victorian room downstairs with an old upright piano that is now draped in cables and wires connected to samplers and computers on the other side of the room. scientific experiments and lab tests are being conducted as new versions of all the songs are being worked out for the live show. expect dates late spring/early summer....

the winter has been dark, cold, and damp, but thankfully due to global warming it is a lot shorter this time around. and as winter is beginning to wane, 2007 is looking to be a good year for canon blue. a very good year indeed. though lips are still sewn shut, soon there will be an exciting announcement, the likes of which has never been heard before in the land of canon blue......

but in the meantime, the printing press is finally up and running again and new pressings of colonies are being painstakenly put together as we speak. rest assured that your orders have not been lost or forgotten. however, if anyone else would still like to receive colonies for free, please write soon as the sun is beginning to set and i don't know how much longer i'll be able to make more copies...

2006 was good to canon blue. it began with only an idea and now it has ended with an idea completed and new ones coming to fruition. colonies is gradually being leaked into the world, escaping from a hole in the wall of my bedroom. the workshop is alive again as the canon blue players begin to assess how to take the sounds out of your headphones and into your hearts. and work has begun on special new recordings of which more shall be revealed in the coming months. thank you to everyone who has stopped by to listen and innocently allowed me to gather a huge database together of addresses and personal information to be used at my discretion.

in other, less pretentiously written news, a potential video is in the works for the next hit single to be released from colonies. right now thats looking to be either pilguin pop or rum diary, but we'll have to wait and see which one tests better down at the clear channel lab.

to those of you who have requested a copy of colonies, rest assured that your letters have not been lost and that if all goes to plan you shall find a specially addressed package to you before the 25th of december.

and on the 7th day canon blue rested. the new record, entitled 'colonies', is now officially mixed and mastered. arriving at just under 45 min., the 11 tracks span the experience of death, love, rebirth, and pill popping penguins. the artwork is in the final stages as well and should hopefully be completed within the next week or so.

the album will be free for anyone who cares to ask. a paypal account will be set up however in case anyone is feeling generous, though nothing will be held against those who don't have anything to give. besides, i probably couldn't affored to buy your record, book, fashion, jewelry either, so all is fair in love and capitalism. perhaps a few rubles for shipping though......

having returned from an extended stay for the holidays in the belly of history surrounded by two rivers i have returned to arrange the last and final details for the completion of the first canon blue album.

recording is finally finished (mixing/mastering still remain) and the album is, at least for now, entitled "COLONIA". a brief visit to wikipedia.com will reveal tens of random details and facts pertaining to the word, neither of which i am intending. so i have decided to retain my own interpretation and if anyone is every in need of even more information to jam into their already overexpanded and headaching brain they need only ask and i will reveal it.

I'm sure that that zen and motorcycle maintanence guy might have something say about that, but perhaps gondry's approach is the only approach you can have with *dare i say it* art. or at least with your own perspective on your own creations. for to create is the role that an 'artist' *there it is again* must begin and end with. for quality is not for the 'artist' *gagging* to decide. only truth. truth to experience and perspective.

with that in mind i offer quantity. to sit on these songs any longer would not only be painfully uncomfortable, but would also work against the very thing i'm trying to accomplish. namely, to finish something.............so the plan is to move ahead from here. to continue to work and finagle these songs to completion. in the meantime i hope these will suffice for all you crazy masses of people constantly calling and stalking me on my way home. that means you stephen baldwin..............

work is progessing slowly, yet assuredly. 'pilguin pop', the first song to hopefully see the light of day, should be up and downloadable shortly. this is the rise of the post-post-post-modern age. we are all brothers and sisters, and brothers and sisters share. so in anticipation of that marxist utopia that I know we are all still waiting for, it is my desire to send out the music for free. So please download, please burn, please share. I hold no regard for dignity. but you must act quickly. already the leather boots can be heard marching along the cobblestone streets of moscow. its only a matter of time before this idealistic society is hijacked by the lenninistic necessity of the being able to afford those new video ipods. you don't even notice how small the screen is!

moving on, for those of you of the economic/political bent, might i humbly recommend thomas l. friedman's book, 'the world is flat: a brief history of the twenty first century'. this comprehensive book traces the rise of the internet and other technological advancements that have played a huge part in the growing global economy. It is a great starting point to the topic or perhaps even a nice companion piece to naomi klein's classic 'no logo.' though perhaps a bit too lenient at times on corporations and the potential of their growing and frightening amount of influence (I see all you adbusters readers out there) this is, to borrow a phrase, a case of 'eat the chicken and leave the bones.' but please come hungry, because there is a lot of chicken on the table.......or tofu.......whatever your preference.

you may ask, 'what does this have to do with canon blue?' to which i may respond, 'absolutely nothing, and absolutely everything.'

22 Years In the Making

here begins something that will perhaps be nothing, but at least it began. the long awaited arrival of the golden opportunity has not come to pass and we now know we have no choice. timid and apprehensive, we step out into the cold and lonely winter night and let the door close softly behind. how will we support the weight of these ideas by ourselves? we do not know the way and the path is not lit, but we stumble along it anyway in hopes that somehow, eventually the light will find us.

the house is empty. years take up no space. years spent rummaging in dirty record stores and running tests in laboratory bedrooms. old pianos and guitars with finger ghosts that play melodies while you try to sleep. inhaling the smell of long forgotten books and re-living the stories that lie there in. days spent outside plowing up the surface of the mother tongue in search of the hidden language beneath. tread lightly, but tread all the same as it is the only way forward and we can no longer stay here.

22 years. we force it all through the narrowest of holes, in hopes that on the other side there might be understanding, beauty, and maybe even a little money (at least enough to pay rent).
